Before there was open source…

I know this is really not open source related, but you have to be gracious with me, I am moving Saturday, and have spent all week loading up this giant metal box that was deposited (at my behest) in my driveway. I came across this box, used many moons ago to move me to South Carolina from South Florida. I thought it would give some of you a smile to see the Seagate sticker. I can recall spending nearly $300 for this 30 Megabyte drive, but it has RLL control! It went into a cutting edge 8088 with a monochrom monitor. That was soon replaced with a blazing fast 286 with a CGA card. Four whopping colors, wow. How the times have changed. Ahh. Those were the days. Actually not, I recall fighting with the MS-DOS based PC to recognize it. And then I recall fighting with my terminal dialer software (whose name I cannot recall, it used a blue screen and dialed out, it was all the rage when I was 10) to connect to my favorite BBS, Moonshae. Wow. Nostalgic. Any of you around during those early days? For what it’s worth, running in another room was an Apple IIc. It’s nice to see LOGO lives on in KTurtle… I promise a new podcast is forthcoming. I am currently taking suggestions as to what to review in the future…look for a post on that soon…

Site progressing nicely…

I am working feverishly on fixing the site up to handle the mass amount of hits it will receive once I crank back up when school starts. I have added a number of links on the right hand side and fixed some of the underlying code to WordPress that I had to customize to my liking and style. The first icon won’t work correctly until I get the itunes approval notice but the second one works as the one click subscription link. Thanks for checking in and I look forward to rocking your eardrums with a new episode soon. I am moving into a new house this week so I am not sure when that is going to happen, tragically there are no open source movers…

Feed issues…

I seem to be having some feed issues. Bear with me, I’m working on it…I am in the process of moving to feedburner, but itunes is rejecting it so I have to wait for them to catch up. Good to have this happen in the early stages!

Podcast Episode 2 – All about WordPress!

This site is based on wordpress, as evidenced by the footers below. I chose wordpress becuase it offers the highest level of customization and ease of use. Now, I host my blog on my paid-for host, so I have a little more freedom in choosing what I want to see when I type in the URL. You can set up a free blog that in my opinion is far better than other free blog services…ahem..blogger…

Anyhoo, I love google but blogger could be better. That said, I chose wordpress for it’s famous five minute install requiring you to only know your SQL database information and host location. It worked like a charm, and I would highly recommend it.

Once you get wordpress installed, you have a myriad of ways to extend it, through the use of themes and plugins.

So that’s what the show is all about! It’s longer, and I stutter more, but it seemed to work. Thanks for listening!

Site changes…

I wanted to draw your attention to some changes to the site’s look and feel since it’s inception a short while ago. First, it’s worth noting that my blog has its own Discussion Board where we can all chat about Open Source and how wonderful it is or any challenges you may be facing. Also you will notice the smooth voting poll on the right side, which does not refresh the entire page when you vote or view the results. I have also “claimed” my blog through technorati and have the obligatory blogs that link here link for all to see. It’s tragically empty. :(

I will be posting soon about new open source ideas and resources, so check back often, or better yet, subscribe to the feed! Oh, and the podcast is Apple iTunes approved!

First podcast episode!

I have created and mastered the first episode of the Open Source Classroom dot com podcast! It was a laborious process as I can tend to be a bit of a perfectionist. I am truly joking considering this episode is purely stream-of-consciousness and straight from the heart. It was fun to do but I found myself watching the clock too much. Well, here’s to learning more and more as time progresses. I would love comments! Thanks for listening…

Welcome to the open source revolution for education!

This blog will be all about open source ideas and help for your classroom! Open source is not just free software, although the cost savings of using open source software can be enormous. Bear in mind that we are not necessarily talking about software at all, but rather an open source web, too!

Wikipedia defines open source as “practices in production and development that promote access to the end product’s sources”. The fact that we as educators have access to the root – the source – allows us to directly influence the product’s outcome. What does that mean for the classroom? Stay tuned…

I am working on hammering out site details and will soon post podcast feeds, as this site will serve to back up the podcast and add the possibilities for comments. Thanks for checking us out and check back soon!!
