Two quick links on Cognitive Load Theory I've been fielding lots of questions lately about Cognitive Load Theory. Here are two quick links that may be useful. First is an article talking about the practical implications of CLT on the design of learning. The second are some "recent" (as of 2003) developments regarding CLT. Happy reading! Update: I clarified the second...

Practical advice on kids and Android app development After hearing about my students' success developing an Android app, I've gotten several emails asking for more details as to how I practically worked with my kids. Here are some pointers that I offered to the first person that emailed me, perhaps they are of some use to you. Please note that your mileage may vary. It's ok to not be...

Publishing an App Inventor app to the Android Market As I mentioned earlier, my students and I published an Android app to the Android Market. See those links for more information on the background. I thought the storm had weakened

Category : General

I only got one email this week asking me to moderate a comment, and it was a legitimate one! I was thoroughly excited, thinking that the creeps that were comment-spamming me had ceased, falling victim to my fervent irritation. Tragically, I was wrong, it turns out that Akismet had just done it’s job.

I logged in to post something about something different (which will come soon), and saw this.

I was feeling good, too, because Bud the Teacher had seemed to have success in this arena as well. Not sure what he did to slow the ingress of comment spam, but it’s good to see that he uses Typepad, indicating that WordPress is not necessarily more vulnerable (or less for argument’s sake).

So I suppose I will take moderation off in a few days, once I make sure Akismet is doing its job and that legitimate comments (the few that there may be ;) are getting through and not being treated like dolphins in the tuna nets.

I’m working on a new podcast episode, hope to have it out in a couple of days. Thanks for your readership!

Chris,

Typepad does a pretty good job of blocking spam — although I don’t have numbers to back that up, as they do it behind their magic curtain of goodness. The reason I turned on comment moderation for a couple of days last week was that I had an attack from several people, apparantly coordinated via a video game discussion board. It was malicious and intentional — very different from most automated comment spam. I’ll be monitoring over the next few days to see if the “troublemakers” return. Occasionally, I do receive comment spam that sneaks through Typepad’s curtain, but those spams are few and far between, which is one reason that I pay Typepad to host my blog. Our school newspaper, which runs on a Drupal platform, is constantly under attack from automated spammers, but I’ve installed a module to help me eradicate that. Good luck — I suspect that the longer you’re around, the more you’ll need some sort of spam attack program or plug-in.
