Two quick links on Cognitive Load Theory I've been fielding lots of questions lately about Cognitive Load Theory. Here are two quick links that may be useful. First is an article talking about the practical implications of CLT on the design of learning. The second are some "recent" (as of 2003) developments regarding CLT. Happy reading! Update: I clarified the second...

Practical advice on kids and Android app development After hearing about my students' success developing an Android app, I've gotten several emails asking for more details as to how I practically worked with my kids. Here are some pointers that I offered to the first person that emailed me, perhaps they are of some use to you. Please note that your mileage may vary. It's ok to not be...

Publishing an App Inventor app to the Android Market As I mentioned earlier, my students and I published an Android app to the Android Market. See those links for more information on the background. This post is decidedly technical. First, once we finished the coding process, we packaged the app for to download to the computer. This is an option in App Inventor. This downloaded an .apk file....

Designing and publishing an Android app with kids This post is designed to provide some context around how/why we decided to build this app. The more technical details of the code and how we published it will come in a future post. My students and I recently completed and published an Android app, and here's how we did it. First, the genesis for this goes back to a question I asked...

Adopt a Classroom

Category : General

I recently found out about Adopt a Classroom dot org. It seems a bit like Donors Choose, which I didn’t have any success with.

But hey, I like the idea, and it limits you to only 100 words, so I focused on my Skype video conference idea, so we’ll see.

If you want to see my beggar page, here it is. I’m not asking for money, just showing you what it looks like. I might take issue with the site’s color scheme, I find it really hard to read, but that’s beside the point if it helps my students.

Jott and Gmail makes for a handy to-do list

Category : General

After reading this lifehacker posting, I followed the link to here and decided to give it a shot.

In minutes I had it all set up and it works like a charm!

I guess my one concern regarding Jott is that it employs human transcribers. The FAQ says the load is shared between humans and machine-based transcription and is done in a clean room, which I suppose is the best possible way for it to happen.

Naturally, I won’t post anything special here anyway, so no credit card numbers running through the system or anything.

Seems promising, I’ll keep you posted…

Second Life statistics are hard to come by

Category : Educational Technology, Grad School

I am trying to find out how many courses are being taught predominantly in Second Life. For this paper, I am defining course as a class that lasts for at least one collegiate semester, is taught by at least a Master’s level instructor, and counts for some sort of degree-seeking college credit. This naturally rules out anything dealing with the SL scripting language, and the like.

Boy is this ever hard to come across!

Any ideas?

I’ve sent emails to the SLED list, so far to no avail. I am trying to locate someone at Linden Labs to help, with no success.

I have seen the Sim Teach list of Universities and Organizations but not all of them actually teach in SL, seems like more of an advertising and marketing venture to me.

So I find myself at a loss. Pathfinder…wherefore art thou?

Shameless plug to help a blogger out

If Steve can do it, so can I!

For those of you in RSS land, I added an affiliate link which pays me 65 dollars each time someone uses it to sign up for Bluehost, which I happen to think is the best web hosting service out there. I know there’s another one that I’ve heard it a bit “dreamy”, but I think Bluehost’s service is pretty fantastic.

So if you’re looking for web hosting, think of me, would you?

Podcast Episode 16 – Podcasting

Category : General

This continues my series from ETV. When I present on podcasting, I spend most of my time on Gcast, which I personally think is the best choice for busy teachers. From embed code to telephone recording, Gcast has it all! Let me know what you think!

Podcast Episode 15 – Blogging

Category : General

This podcast is a bit of a downer, I have to admit.

This is a recording of a session I did at the SC ETV Technology Workshop. I had a room full of teachers interested in blogging with their students, having heard so much about it.

I have a draft post called Students should not blog, that I will post some time soon, and ultimately the conclusion that I draw is that there is not a widely available tool that enables student blogging with appropriate levels of teacher involvement. I think Class Blogmeister was on track (and could still be), and I certainly this DrupalEd is there, but it’s not for everyteacher.

So take a listen, you can subscribe in iTunes if you like, or listen/download here. Enjoy!

Feedity – Create RSS Feeds from sites without one

Category : Feeds

This is a cool tool if I’ve ever seen one…

Since I’m such a darn geek, I like to keep track of my University’s IT Bulletin, which does not have an RSS feed. I’ll admit, I cannot understand why not given the size of my school, but hey.

So here is the original page…

http://uts.sc.edu/itbulletin/

Fairly straightforward, easy enough to read, and now you know where I go to grad school!

Thanks to CybernetNews I found this really great new tool called Feedity that takes any web site without RSS and makes it all RSS’ey and tasty!

I zipped over to it, pasted in the URL and voila, I had a new RSS feed and there was even a convenient little drop down box to allow me to subscribe with Bloglines (my favorite little aggregator).

Cool. I’ll have to let you know how updates work…

Is my content being stolen?

Category : Feeds

This is disconcerting. For the last few posts, I’ve gotten a pingback from a blog called http://opencontent.info/ (intentionally not linked) and I think they might be boosting my feed.

Weak.

Am I wrong, do you know about these folks?

What do I do? I am posting this before really thinking about it, so I might be missing something obvious here…

Update: I added opencontent.info to Spam Karma 2′s Domain Blacklist, so maybe that will fix it.

Check out these numbers…

You have to admit, if you believe in the validity of these internet speed tests, this is pretty impressive.

I took this test just for kicks thanks to a prodding by Julie Lindsay. Thanks, Julie!

Remember, if you participate in any of these speed test meme’s, please use the tag speedtest07.

Thanks, all!
