Two quick links on Cognitive Load Theory I've been fielding lots of questions lately about Cognitive Load Theory. Here are two quick links that may be useful. First is an article talking about the practical implications of CLT on the design of learning. The second are some "recent" (as of 2003) developments regarding CLT. Happy reading! Update: I clarified the second...

Practical advice on kids and Android app development After hearing about my students' success developing an Android app, I've gotten several emails asking for more details as to how I practically worked with my kids. Here are some pointers that I offered to the first person that emailed me, perhaps they are of some use to you. Please note that your mileage may vary. It's ok to not be...

Publishing an App Inventor app to the Android Market As I mentioned earlier, my students and I published an Android app to the Android Market. See those links for more information on the background. This post is decidedly technical. First, once we finished the coding process, we packaged the app for to download to the computer. This is an option in App Inventor. This downloaded an .apk file....

Designing and publishing an Android app with kids This post is designed to provide some context around how/why we decided to build this app. The more technical details of the code and how we published it will come in a future post. My students and I recently completed and published an Android app, and here's how we did it. First, the genesis for this goes back to a question I asked...

Google Ads – but only for the search engine folks and a few others

Category : General

I’ve been placing Google ads on the site. Hopefully, you won’t even see them.

You see, I get a lot of search engine traffic for a few posts some time ago. Why not try to recoup some of the hosting costs?

Using Planet Ozh’s masterful plugin, Who Sees Ads, theoretically none of you should see the ads when you visit the site, and they should only show up for folks who come from a search engine or on posts that are over 30 days old.

Please let me know if it’s not working (that means visit the site so you can see if they’re there!!) so I can fix it or ditch the entire experiment.

Fireshot – Screenshot tool as a Firefox extension

Category : Software

I love me some Skitch, and I use Jing on the PC. Jing takes a while to load and can be a memory hog when it’s loaded, and then there’s that creepy orb staring me in the face. What if I want to take a quick screenshot (using the work PC), annotate it and go!

Enter Fireshot. It allows you to take quick screenshots, add the requisite arrows and text and save it as a PNG, JPG, or more. I know Jing is against JPG as a format, but Fireshot embraces it.

Here is a quick one I did a few minutes ago…(click to see bigger version)

I like that it integrates seamlessly with Firefox, adding a Superman-esque S in the top right corner of the browser window. There’s no Flickr integration like Skitch, but it’s an easy upload anyway.

Way to go Fireshot! I’ll be keeping this one around.

PbWiki makes Life Round Here easier!

Category : General

PbWiki announced a new feature that I think is fantastic, and the implementation is just great. Any page you tag with template will show up when you click create a new page.

For me, that’s darn nice. For Life Round Here participants, that’s really nice.

All you have to do now is log in with your contributor login (remember to use the my.pbwiki.com page to make it easier) and then click on Create a New Page. Once you do that, you’ll see this screen…

Use the indicated one and you’ll be automatically set up with the exact format we want! Good stuff, just good stuff.
